KITCHEN IDEAS
Laminate kitchen countertops offer an attractive and durable alternative to expensive stone slab surfaces. There are a variety of patterns and colors to choose from and in many cases we can reface your existing countertops, saving you even more. Laminate countertops first became popular in the 1950s, and they maintain a time-tested appeal in the 21st century as well. This type of counter has the distinct advantage of offering a cohesive, seamless look thanks to options like integrated or under-mount sinks, and backsplashes.

IS RE-FACING AN OPTION?
THE RIGHT CHOICE
TRANSFORM YOUR KITCHEN
These varieties are prized for their bright white fields and distinct patterns, making them the standard for luxury design.
- Calacatta Marble: The ultimate statement of luxury. It features a brighter white background than Carrara and bold, thick veins in gold, gray, or warm beige.
- Calacatta Gold: Highly sought after for its rich, warm golden-brown tones, making every slab a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
- Calacatta Borghini: Known for high contrast and unique gray and gold veins, recommended for both residential and commercial focal points.
- Statuario Marble: The rarest and most expensive variety, historically used for masterpiece sculptures. It has a purely white field with high-contrast, bold gray veins that are often more linear and less varied in color than Calacatta.
- White Thassos Marble: Sourced from Greece, this is the whitest marble in the world with almost no veining. It offers exceptional visual clarity and light reflection, ideal for modern, luminous spaces.
For active kitchens where durability is a primary concern alongside beauty, certain denser marbles perform better:
- Danby Marble: Quarried in Vermont, this is considered the most durable natural marble for kitchen use. It has a much lower absorption rate than Italian marbles, making it significantly more resistant to moisture and staining.
- Makrana Marble: Known for its extreme density and low water absorption, this Indian marble was used to build the Taj Mahal and is exceptionally long-lasting.
- Emperador Marble: A high-density Spanish marble available in Dark (chocolate brown) or Light (caramel/beige) tones. Its darker color and intricate spiderweb veining are excellent at hiding daily wear, minor scratches, and spills.“The good ones” also depend on the finish. A honed finish is satiny and matte, which helps hide etching and scratches better than a high-gloss polished finish.
Granite?
- Superior Heat Resistance: Granite is naturally heat-resistant, allowing you to place hot pots and pans directly from the stove onto the surface without damage—a major advantage over engineered materials like quartz.
- Built for the Outdoors: Unlike many other surfaces, granite is highly UV-resistant and won’t fade or warp in direct sunlight, making it the ideal choice for Florida’s outdoor kitchens and BBQ areas.
- Moisture & Durability: When properly sealed, granite’s hard surface (Mohs 6-7) resists scratches, moisture, and mold, standing up beautifully to high-traffic kitchen and bathroom environments.
- Long-Term Value: Industry reports consistently rank granite as a top choice for maintaining home resale value due to its lifespan and prestigious natural appearance.
- Level 1 (Entry-Level): Typically features simpler, more uniform patterns and colors like the popular Ornamental. These are often thinner slabs (around 3/8 inch) and are the most budget-friendly option.
- Level 2 (Mid-Grade): Offers a wider array of colors and more visual “movement” in the stone. Slabs from this tier, such as Viscount White or White Bahamas, are often 3/4 inch (2cm to 3cm) thick, providing a balance of durability and striking aesthetics.
- Level 3+ (Exotic/High-Grade): These represent the pinnacle of natural stone. Sourced from exclusive quarries in regions like Italy or Brazil, Level 3+ granite features rare colors (like deep blues or vibrant greens) and dramatic, one-of-a-kind veining.
From classic kitchen islands to high-performance outdoor bars, we source our materials from trusted local partners like Elite Custom Granite and Global Stone Collection to ensure you get the highest quality slabs.
- The Professional Choice: Quartz vs. GraniteChoosing the right countertop is about more than just color—it’s about matching your lifestyle. At db Home Improvements, we help our clients navigate the choice between the natural artistry of granite and the engineered precision of quartz.Quartz: The Perfectionist’s SurfaceQuartz is a man-made, engineered stone created by combining roughly 90% natural quartz crystals with 10% polyresin and pigments.
- Consistency is Key: Unlike granite, which is cut from the earth with unpredictable patterns, quartz offers a uniform, controlled look. If your style is modern or minimalist and you need every detail to line up perfectly, quartz delivers that seamless, consistent finish.
- Maintenance-Free Living: Quartz is naturally non-porous, meaning it never needs to be sealed. It is highly resistant to stains from coffee, wine, or oils, making it the ultimate “set-it-and-forget-it” surface for busy indoor kitchens and bathrooms.
- Hygienic and Safe: Because it doesn’t have tiny pores or cracks, quartz resists the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew—ideal for spaces where cleanliness is a top priority.
Granite: Nature’s Unique Work of ArtGranite is 100% natural, quarried directly from the earth and polished into one-of-a-kind slabs.- Unmatched Heat Resistance: For serious home cooks, granite is the workhorse. It can handle extreme heat from pots and pans straight off the stove without the risk of scorching or melting.
- The Best for Florida Outdoors: Granite is UV-stable and won’t fade or yellow in direct sunlight. For our Florida patio and BBQ projects, granite is our most recommended material.
- Natural Character: If you love the idea of a countertop that tells a geological story through unique veining and mineral swirls, granite offers a rustic elegance that man-made materials can’t fully replicate.
utting board, this material is very resistant to cutting and abrasion.
- Unrivaled Hardness: On the Mohs scale, quartzite (7/10) is harder than both granite and many types of steel. It is extremely resistant to scratches and chips, even in high-traffic kitchens.
- Heat & Etch Resistant: Unlike engineered quartz, quartzite is naturally heat-tolerant. It is also “etch-proof” against common kitchen acids like lemon juice and vinegar that would permanently damage a marble surface.
- Marble-Like Aesthetics: Quartzite often features the “washy,” fluid movement and light color palettes (whites, creams, and soft grays) that homeowners seek in high-end design.
- The “Natural Surprise”: Every quartzite slab is a unique piece of earth-made art. While quartz is man-made to be predictable, quartzite provides those natural mineral details and color variations that make a kitchen stand out.
- Challenging Fabrication: Because it is so hard, it is difficult to cut and shape. Precision matters for clean seams, which is why professional installation is non-negotiable.
- Sealing Requirements: As a natural stone, quartzite is porous and must be sealed annually to prevent deep stains from oils or pigmented liquids like wine.
- Premium Pricing: In Florida, installed quartzite typically ranges from $80 to $220 per square foot for 2026, depending on the rarity of the stone.
- Classic Elegance: Taj Mahal (creamy gold) and Macaubas Classic (marble-like gray) remain the most popular for their timeless look.
- Bold Statements: Slabs with “bold movement” like Ocean Blue (deep blue/smoky gray) and Bianco Superiore are trending for luxury waterfall islands.
- Warm Tones: Moving into 2026, there is a shift toward warm taupes, sand tones, and terracotta hues that complement natural wood cabinetry.
Pull out shelves are a must-have for any kitchen update. Not only do they make accessing your pots and pans much simpler, they are easier to clean and organize as well! Rolling shelves can be installed in cabinets of all shapes and sizes.
Small Kitchen Expansion
Cabinet Re-Facing
Re-Facing is a great alternative to a full kitchen remodeling project for those who can’t commit the time and effort. However, Re-Facing is comparable in cost to a new kitchen. Often the choice between Re-Facing and new comes down to your countertops. If you want to save your existing countertops, Re-Facing may be the right option for you. Added benefits include that Re-Facing takes less time to complete and less materials being removed and replaced from your home.
If you are considering remodeling your kitchen, cabinet re-facing is an alternative to a complete remodel. Cabinet Re-Facing is a great way to beautify your existing cabinets and simultaneously create a dramatically different and distinctive new look in your kitchen. People who choose Re-Facing are generally satisfied with their overall cabinet layout but want to change the look and improve the functionality of their cabinetry.
The Process
- We begin by removing the cabinet doors and drawers.
- The next step prepares the cabinet boxes for the Re-Facing process by sanding, repairing and modifying them. We will also add any new cabinet boxes at this time.
- Once the cabinets are ready, we will apply our identical veneers using 3M permanent cement. If you choose to replace your drawer boxes, we will install dovetail constructed drawers and new rails.
- Once the cabinets are veneered and the drawer boxes are in place, new doors, drawer fronts and moldings are installed and aligned.
